Truecaller is a consumer caller-ID app with a web lookup. You give it a phone number. It returns the name and spam reputation its users have attached to that number. The directory is large because the app is built around a user-contributed address book.
That is the feature and the catch. A name in Truecaller is a crowd-sourced label. It can be the subscriber, a business line, a nickname someone typed, or a leftover from a shared phone. Spam tags are the same way: useful, noisy, and occasionally wrong.
How I use it
As a reverse-phone first pass when I need a name to even start. PhoneInfoga will tell me the country and the carrier. Truecaller will sometimes tell me what humans call the line. Revealer.US and other paid OSINT tools will try to attach accounts to the same number. I run Truecaller anyway because it is the label a lot of other people already see on that number.
The mobile app is the main product. The web lookup exists. Paid tiers remove ads and add extra spam tools that do not matter for research.
Limits
You should assume the company has a copy of a lot of contact books. If that bothers you, do not install the app on a working phone. For a number you are authorized to research, the web lookup is enough.
A named hit here is a lead, not an identity. I write it down and I confirm it somewhere that is not a crowd-sourced caller ID.
